Winter Safety Part 2

Happy winter! In a previous blog post, we discussed some of the things to keep in mind this winter when you’re travelling to visit family and friends. Winter brings with it a lot of fun and exciting possibilities, but it also brings with it the increased possibility of dangerous road conditions. Since we only touched on a few safety measures to keep in mind in our last post, we’ve dedicated this post to exploring a few more safe practices.
  • ·         Be careful using your windshield wipers, as during the winter they can freeze and using them in that state can damage the motor or blow the fuse.
  • ·         Use the proper headlights depending on the weather. Fog lights will give you more visibility without increasing the reflection off of fog and ice. However, be sure to turn these off as soon as conditions improve.
  • ·         Before you leave for a destination, be sure you have a set route. Having to check maps and apps while driving can cause dangerous distractions.
  • ·         That being said, you should still make sure you cellphone is always charged when you leave during bad conditions in case you need it in an emergency.
  • ·         Only drive in bad weather conditions if it’s an absolute necessity. The best way to stay safe is to wait out bad conditions.
  • ·         Make sure your lights are working properly as cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians can be more difficult to see during the winter.

Another important thing to keep in mind this winter is to only drive on roads that are properly treated with rock salt and ice melt.
